Risk Assessment Workshop

A workshop to develop and present the current state of knowledge regarding the Wildfire Risk Assessment Framework, RMRS-GTR-315, took place in Missoula, Montana at the end of January. Thirty-eight people attended while another 50+ viewed a video simulcast to build capacity by introducing risk framework concepts to support local wildfire risk assessments. The Wildfire Risk and Fuel Treatment Analysis Workshop was a collaborative effort by WO Fire and Aviation Management (WO-FAM) Fuels and Fire Ecology, RMRS, Regions 1 and 5, the TEAMS enterprise unit, and the Pacific Northwest Research Station Western Wildland Environmental Threat Assessment Center (WWETAC).

Workshop facilitators included Nicole Vaillant, WWETAC; Laurie Kurth, Frankie Romero, and Jim Menakis, WO-FAM; and WFM RDA Fire Application Specialist Erin Noonan-Wright, Missoula. Additional instructors included, from HD Lead Spatial Analyst Jessica Haas, Research Foresters Matt Thompson and Dave Calkin, and Research Ecologist Karen Short; and from FFS Spatial Fire Analyst Greg Dillon; Keith Stockman, R1; Joe Scott and Julie Gilbertson-Day, Pyrologix; Phil Bowden, R5; Don Helmbrecht (TEAMS); David Buckley, DTSwildfire and Technosylva; and Elizabeth Reinhardt, WO-FAM. Workshop participants specialize in GIS, fuels and fire planning, and resource management.
